Design has always been one of my favorite parts of the wedding planning process! There are so many fabulous ways to bring your wedding to life – from vibrant colors, to textures, to little personal touches. But deciding on the perfect design can also be daunting – with so many ideas out there, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Below are some of the elements that I ask my couples to think through when starting the design process….
- Pick one main color
Instead of looking at ALL the colors you like – start with one. This is the one that you envision your bridesmaids wearing, the one that will be in your flowers and invites. From there take a look at three or four colors that compliment it. Make sure you stay within the tones and that they compliment each other. Stop by your local paint/hardware store and look at the swatches. Remember, you may like gray and chocolate brown, but they don’t usually work well together. You may not be able to use all of your favorite colors, so stick to your chosen colors and don’t keep adding in new ones. Less is more! - Play up your wedding venue
If you booked a picturesque country garden then find little details to enhance that setting. You can get cute teacups to decorate your dessert table or fresh lavender saches for your favors. If you’re getting married at a vineyard, see if your florist can incorporate vines into your wedding canopy or head table. - Use everyday items for inspiration
Is there a really cute dress in your closet that you just adore? Take a close look at the color, design and fabric and see if you can incorporate those details into your design. Or maybe you and your fiancee love riding bikes – you can get a cute bike decal stamp and add it to your invitations and menus. Your weddings should ultimately reflect you and the things that inspire you! - Don’t go overboard
It’s exciting to have a theme picked out that you love- but remember it doesn’t have to be in every single detail in your wedding. All those DYI projects are great, but if you are doing too many then it just adds stress to the whole process. A few touches of your theme here and there will be appreciated by your guests and will create the effect you are going without it feeling overdone. - When all else fails, go with what’s classic
There are so many wedding trends out there that seem great initially but ultimately will go out of style. When designing a wedding, I always ask my client, “will you still love this when you are looking at your wedding pictures ten/twenty years from now?” If there is ever a question or doubt- then go with what seems to be timeless. It may seem less edgy but ultimately trends come and go.
